Badger Commerce unaffected by the CrowdStrike global IT outage

The July 2024 CrowdStrike update grounded airlines and hospitals. Badger Commerce kept trading, and the reason was an architecture decision.

You will have heard about the worldwide outage affecting Windows machines, caused by a CrowdStrike update. It has grounded major airlines, disrupted the UK's health services and taken out critical infrastructure globally.

Badger Commerce is completely unaffected.

Why we are still running

Three reasons, and all of them are decisions taken long before today.

  1. Cloud-based infrastructure. The whole platform runs on cloud infrastructure built for high availability and scalability, so a failure confined to one class of machine somewhere else does not propagate to us.

  2. Infrastructure as code. We reprovision our infrastructure from code nightly. Systems are consistently refreshed rather than accumulating drift, which is what turns a bad update into a long incident elsewhere.

  3. No Windows dependency. We do not use Windows for anything. The platform is built on non-Windows technologies end to end, so the failure mode causing today's disruption has no surface to land on here.

None of that is clever. It is the ordinary consequence of not having a Windows estate to patch — which is worth saying plainly, because "we were unaffected" is only a useful claim if you can say why.

What that means for you today

While others are restoring services, your stores are open and trading. Our support team is available as normal if you have questions, whether or not they are about today.

  • Reliable uptime. The cloud infrastructure keeps your store open for business.
  • Security. The measures protecting your data and transactions are unchanged and unaffected.
  • Support. The team is here, as usual.

If you are affected elsewhere

If today's outage has disrupted the platform you currently trade on, we are happy to talk about what moving looks like. Our ecommerce platform runs on the architecture described above, and you can see what it costs or get in touch directly.

Stay safe, and keep trading.
